Stocks Continue To Cut Further Deep Forcing Us To Raise Higher Levels Of Cash And Go Short Some Stock While We Wait For a Real Follow-Through-Day; The Market’s Downtrend Resumes

July 6, 2008

Even though it seems like it will never be over, eventually, we will have HOT beautiful perfect (look at all the different years of PAST BIG WINNERS) to buy later on. But first we have too many parabolic issues in commodity related stocks and the market is in a clear downtrend to be looking for new buys. The market looked like from March to June it wanted to bottom and start a little rally in some hot issues, but JUST LIKE 2000, the perma-bull/bank-bottom-callers (then internet-bottom-callers) have had the rug pulled out from under them. I wanted to get bullish but when speculative CANSLIM hotties like AEHR and DGLY can’t keep HOT HOT charts, trust me it is time to stop believing and to start raising the cash. I know my history. We will eventually get 2-3% up days on volume 25% higher than the day before for a few days (just like in late 99 and in late 02 and March 03) that tell us to clearly LOAD-UP and get long. But for now we wait and enjoy the “summer time” while the “living isn’t so easy (for those familiar with the music of a band called Sublime from SoCal).

FULL ANALYSIS BEFORE 5AM EST MONDAY.

OTC Market Offers Relief From Sarbanes-Oxley - Barron’s

July 6, 2008

Why are large foreign companies like Volvo and Bayer listed on the OTC market? Money, says Barron’s.

Sarbanes-Oxley regulations are costing companies millions to comply with. Foreign companies don’t want to pay high accounting fees for a U.S. listing, especially when London’s and Luxembourg’s depositary receipt markets are increasingly appealing. Through May 2008, more than 70 foreign companies have delisted, and more could follow. So the SEC took the historical step of allowing foreign entities to move to the OTC if less than 5% of their global trading volume came from the U.S.

10 Signs of a Recession

July 6, 2008

Stockerati submits:

Happy Birthday, America!

The typical economic cycle consists of two main phases: Boom and Recession. The phase leading to a boom is called expansion and that leading to a recession is called contraction. Another way of looking at this is considering expansion the transition from recession-boom and contraction the transition from boom-recession.

Fed Watch: Follow the Money

July 6, 2008

Tim Duy submits:

My apologies to Brad Setser for borrowing the title of his blog for the evening.

I am writing tonight while on vacation at a cabin in Central Oregon. I do not have high speed internet access, reverting instead to a telephone modem. Consequently, I have left out some links that I would normally include. Not exactly my most polished piece either. And I probably shouldn’t even be working; it is just my son and me tonight, and he went to bed hours ago. A wise man would have followed and taken the rare opportunity for extended sleep, but I had some stories I just could not get out of my head, so better just to write them down.

Global Stocks are Showing Weakier Economic Times Ahead

July 6, 2008

Our new world, the Global Economy. Many pundits are touting the power of the global economy. New powerhouses that are emerging: India, China, Singapore, and Australia. Most notably are India and China, the two countries who hold (seemingly) half of th world’s population. Tremendous growth potential in either country is obvious but, is it reality? I am not denying 20 years from now India and China will have economies that will rival those of the G8’s best but, is it just straight up? In … [visit site to read more]

Per the S&P report (JPM, rated BUY)

July 6, 2008

As seen on the S&P report: We anticipate further pressure in JPM’s market-sensitive business in 2008, as the environment remains challenging. We expect near-term results to be pressured by credit quality issues in its sub-prime mortgage, auto, home equity, and credit card portfolios. Return on equity increased from 7.8% in 2005 to 12.2% in 2006 and 13.0% in 2007.We think recent expense management initiatives, implemented by Mr. Dimon, JPM’s CEO, will help drive ROE improvement in 2008.We see EPS growth of 5% annually over the next three years.

Tried and True in Troubled Times! (SYK, rated BUY)

July 6, 2008

Stryker has "always" had a strong financial position with lots of cash and great management. In trying markets  investors are seeking rock-solid companies that can weather the rough seas that we are experiencing. As the Baby-Boomers age (along with their hips, knees, etc.) the demand for orthopaedic products  has to keep pace. If you look at a chart of Stryker’s performance over the past twenty-so years you see steady growth and, with four splits thrown in, an overall PPS increase of over 8,000%! Steady dividends- steady double digit growth! Innovative, flexible and worthy of a strong buy! (Conference call coming up very soon!)
