To Have and To Hold: Why a Bailout Would Weaken the Dollar

July 11, 2008

roger nusbaumRoger Nusbaum submits:

From the I’m not sayin’ I’m just sayin’  file: a quick word in case we all get a reminder over the next few days about how trading curbs and circuitbreakers work….

The news about Fannie (FNM) and Freddie (FRE) has kicked up a notch obviously and we have a potentially long two days of just waiting.

Smart Money, R.I.P.

July 11, 2008

Eric Fox submits:

I don’t mean to rub salt in a wound, since I have had my share of bad investments, but I have always despised the concept of "smart money." It implies that everyone else is not smart money, but rather is "dumb money." I also maintain that a belief in this theory promotes a herd instinct among investors, which is something we desperately need less of.

So to finally put this theory in its grave, here is a list of the largest holders of Freddie Mac (FRE) and Fannie Mae (FNM):

5 Steps For Saving Fannie

July 11, 2008

matt cooperMatt Cooper (Portfolio.com) submits:

I’ve been worried about Fannie Mae (FNM) for a long time. A few months ago I wrote a column about it. More than ten years ago, when it was riding high, I was worried, too. Now I’m really worried.

Fannie always seemed to me to be built on the worst of propositions–private profit and socialized risk. What was supposed to be a nimble hybrid, the ultimate public-private partnership, represented the worst of both worlds.

Sloppy Markets Lure Sloppy Traders

July 11, 2008

Today is another PRIME example of how bear markets with low VIXs and terrible NH/NL work.  This market continues to be plagued by those who love to be a hero and catch the ultimate bottom.  So far, how has it worked out for everyone?  Financials are a complete disaster, years away from recovering and we have Crude Oil prices at all time highs.  The Global Economy is slowing, inflation at home and abroad is not slowing down and better yet look at all the charts of major indexes from around the globe.  The charts are telling us there is something serious afoot globally.  Our global economy is not what everyone thinks.  Our markets are in the process of determining that at the moment.  Let the charts guide you and they are screaming to KEEP OUT.

Inactivity is your best friend, better yet a vacation is calling everyone’s name.
