Today’s stock selection:
FAST Fastenal
Inspired by:

Growth or value? How about both?

Many of the best investors, including mutual fund icon Martin Zweig, have relied on hybrid strategies.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StrategyLab/Rn…

Fastenal ( FAST , news , msgs ) . Based in Minnesota, Fastenal is the largest fastener distributor in the U.S. It makes a variety of industrial supplies and tools, ranging from cutting tools and abrasives to hydraulics and pneumatics to chemicals and paints. The company has 12 distribution centers in the U.S. and more than 2,160 stores. It has a market capitalization of $6.7 billion.

Though Fastenal’s business might not be the most exciting, the company has been generating just the kind of strong earnings history my Zweig-based model likes to see. The firm’s earnings per share for the current quarter (46 cents) is positive, for one thing, and its EPS growth rate for the quarter (27.78% compared with the same quarter a year ago) is also positive, another good sign.

In addition, Fastenal’s growth rate for the current quarter is greater than its EPS growth rate for the past three quarters (19%, compared with the same three quarters a year earlier). That shows that earnings aren’t just increasing; their growth is accelerating, which my Zweig-based model likes.

Zweig also looked at long-term earnings, and one way my Zweig-based model does this is by making sure a firm’s EPS have grown in each year of the past five. Fastenal’s EPS for the past five years have been 55 cents, 86 cents, $1.10, $1.32 and, most recently, $1.54, passing this test.

As you can see, when it comes to growth, Fastenal rates quite high. But now it’s time for the Zweig strategy’s value check. Remember, Zweig didn’t like firms whose P/E ratios were more than three times the market average, or greater than 43 regardless of the market average, because they were too risky. Currently, Fastenal’s P/E is 27.31, while the market P/E is 16. That passes the test, indicating that the stock is still a good buy.

In addition, Fastenal scores well — extremely well, in fact — on my Zweig-based model’s other value-type test, the debt-equity ratio. While its industry (miscellaneous fabricated products) has an average debt-equity ratio of 78.96%, Fastenal has no debt, passing this test with flying colors.

Hedge Your Funds in Gold Stocks (VGZ, rated BUY)

July 14, 2008

The Markets are in tremendous uncertainty conditions and head to fall. It will drag investors down to suffer more big losses. But all those that are suck do not mean we cannot find any opportunities to invest in the market. There are still bullish in gold sector rather than we attempt to find other stocks that might be recommended as stocks that proof from market downswing. Recession proof stocks do not ensure investors that they will be safe from sucker rally and market turbulence. Gold stocks were mostly under correction since late June as Oil Prices were corrected. As raising credit meltdown panic that was driven by collapsing Fannie Mae (FNM), Fraddie Mac (FRE), and Lehman Brothers (LEH) on last Friday; mostly Stocks were red but Gold Stocks were green. Rebecca Engmann Darst co-authored this article.

Financial
Select Sector SPDR (XLF) –
Despite opening higher on news of the Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac lifeline, the financial sector ETF quickly turned tail to show
a downtick of 1.5% to $18.38. Implied volatility on all XLF options remains
extremely elevated at 63.4% against a historic reading of 39.4% on the stock
– that’s still in excess of March 17 highs. The more than 400,000
options trading by noon show puts and calls trading in relative balance, though
earlier today we noted heavy buying pressure in July 17 and 18 strike puts,
which would imply further declines for the remainder of the week.

Treasury Market: Confounding the Nonbelievers

July 14, 2008

John Jansen submits:

The treasury market is confounding the nonbelievers with a bit of a rally and a bit of a steepening trade. The treasury market is responding to some softness in the equity market and particularly to softness in financial stocks. Fannie Mae (FNM), Freddie Mac (FRE) and Lehman (LEH) each opened to strong gains but has since retreated. FNM and FRE are virtually unchanged and LEH is down 5 percent.

The one month bill has rallied by about 20 basis points this morning and earlier it was as much as 40 basis points lower. The 2year note is leading a curve steepening move which has 2 year/10 year about 5 basis points wider than it was at the open. The spread currently is around 140 basis points. Swap spreads were several basis points tighter at the start but are wider now. With the rally in the 2year treasury note 2 year swap spreads are wider by 4 ½ basis points. Spreads in the 5year and 10 year sector are wider by a basis point.

SPY Gapping Higher

July 14, 2008

Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

The S&P 500 tracking SPY ETF is currently trading up 1.24% in the pre-market following the FNM and FRE news over the weekend.  We found all opening gaps of 1% or more since SPY began trading back in 1993 to see what the market tends to do from the open to the close.  Since ‘93, the SPY has gapped up more than one percent 122 times.  Of these 122 occurrences, it has continued higher from the open to the close 69 times (56%) and averaged a gain of 0.23% (the median gain is 0.28%).

Below we highlight all SPY gaps of 1% or more during the current bear market.  Of the 11 times it has happened since last October, SPY has gone higher 6 times and averaged a gain of 0.48%.  It has continued higher by at least another one percent 5 times, and reversed and gone lower by more than one percent twice.  Based on this small amount of data, prospects for a further rally after the open are somewhat promising.
