Stocks Turn in Bullish Close
July 22, 2008
Stocks are definitely looking higher, volume accompanied the move today. Although I do not believe we are entering a new bull market I do believe this will help us move higher for a small time frame. Airlines and Financials are leading this rally, not what I want leading. However, I’ll take the upside. Keep your losses small and new positions small.
I am traveling Wednesday, looking forward to a change of scenery. However, I will still post about this crazy market!
Enjoy!

Sector Performance Surrounding Earnings
July 22, 2008
Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:
Below we highlight the average performance of stocks in each sector on the first trading day following earnings reports this season. Since Alcoa (AA) reported on July 8th, Financial stocks that have reported earnings have averaged a gain of 5.48% on the day. This is by far the highest of any sector and highlights that investors most likely overdid things on the downside for many banks and brokers (at least in the short term).
Industrials have been the second best performing stocks on earnings, averaging a gain of 4.51% on the day. Healthcare is the only other sector where stocks have averaged gains in response to earnings.

What Do the S&P500 Dividend Yield and the 3-Month T-Bill Tell Us About Equities?
July 22, 2008
Barry Ritholtz submits:
Longtime readers of mine — going back to the email days 10 years ago — will note that at various times I have been bullish or bearish (or both, depending upon different sectors). Regardless of our investment posture, there is always a good faith effort to maintain an analytical rigor and intellectual discipline in our investment approach.
This means sometimes discarding attractive theories, or embracing counter-intuitive ones. It also means questioning your assumptions, stress testing your theories, and whenever possible, having your ideas "peer-reviewed" to identify weaknesses or possible theoretical holes. Blogging has been very helpful in that regard.
